  1. For the first time, we celebrated Halloween at home last night rather than on the streets trick-or-treating. It was more of a traditional Samhain celebration. I was amazed at what a great time we had last night carving pumpkins grown in our garden (wow, was that cool!), lighting candles, remembering friends and family who have passed away, and telling scary stories. We chose this approach because going out would have made too late a night for school the next day, but I think we will make this a tradition and continue it. As for dressing up, we did that on Saturday and cruised the downtown mall – maybe next year we will dress up and have an old fashioned Halloween party with activities like bobbing for apples and the like.

  2. I made those Waldo doughnuts last night (pumpkin ones). Even though I discovered at the last minute that my candy thermometer is useless for frying (it doesn’t go up high enough, temperature-wise), they came out great. Thanks for posting that recipe link.

(It made for a huge mess in the kitchen, and there’s all that gunked-up canola oil to be disposed of, and I gained two pounds overnight, but considering it’s a once-a-year treat, I figure: what the hell? Live a little.)
