On July 24, 1915, the SS Eastland steamer took on board 2,752 passengers while docked on the Chicago River. When passengers rushed to the side of the ship to watch a passing canoe race, the enormous, top-heavy vessel quite suddenly rolled over. 848 people died in what remains the largest loss of life in a Great Lakes shipwreck. The cold storage warehouse to which the bodies were taken is now the sound stage for the Oprah Winfrey Show.
