Frank Rich on the presidential race.

Frank Rich provided an astute analysis of the presidential race in Saturday’s Times that’s well worth reading. He looks specifically at Palin’s influence on the Republican ticket, and what her selection says about McCain and the party. Palin is dangerously like President Bush: an eager, pliant naif who, if elected, will do as told by her handlers. The “McSame” moniker long struck me as an unfair label, but now it strikes me as apt. (“It’s apt. Apt!”)

  1. Palin’s certainly a pliant neophyte, but McCain himself is the one scaring the bejeezus out of me today. He just released an ad about the economy, the content and tone of which you can guess at from its title: “Crisis.” Meanwhile, he’s in Jacksonville right now saying that our economy is strong.

So John McCain’s believes the economy is in crisis, but doesn’t believe that there’s anything fundamentally wrong? You don’t have to be an economist to know that doesn’t make sense–he simply can’t articulate a belief about the economy because he doesn’t know what’s going on.

  2. I love this… by attacking the bottom of the Republican Ticket, it only highlights the weaknesses of the top of the Democratic Ticket. At this point, Biden has been made irrelevant and even Obama has felt compelled to go after her. I don’t mind.

Nah, I don’t think the average voter perceived it like that at all. If anything, it highlights the weakness of the top of the Republican ticket—McCain has been overshadowed by his own running mate.
