Check out Del. Tom Rust’s Google map of his district. What a great little feature. Every representative should have this on their website.

How’d he do this? I think it’s fantastic!
A basic function of Google Maps (and Google Earth) is the ability to draw complex polygons via JavaScript. Clearly Del. Rust has a clever and with-it website developer. Once I wrap up the two projects I’m working on now, I’m sorely tempted to parse the GIS data for every district and create a website that provides Google maps for every district, such that representatives and local parties can use them on their websites. It’s really not easy to know where district boundaries are — something like this could be enormously helpful.
You can download the entire definitions list, but it’s GBs worth of data. We tried to do this with the standard google maps api for the full state, but the sheer weight of the data bogged down the whole process.
Incredible! I want one for District 48. Time to challenge Mapquest and Yahoo! to go Google one better.
