Human DNA varies enormously.

A first-of-its-kind global analysis of DNA from 270 people has shown that people’s DNA can vary by as much as 10%, far more than the 0.1% that was long believed to be likely. (Via /.)

  1. I forget who it was, but some scientist (or scientific publication) made a similar suggestion about a year or two ago. They said that genetic comparisons based simply on shared genes were overly simplistic — that the order and combinations were probably more important than we’d realized.

    Guess this might be true.

On the plus side, this may help us understand the real differences between various peoples. On the down side, it may give rise to more genetic-based bigotry. It seems to me that any possible (or real) differences in genetic makeup (be they physical, intellectual, emotional, health, etc) are probably swamped by cultural and environmental differences. It would be a shame if we pretended to ignore genetic differences, but it would also be a shame if we exalted genes to a pedestal and used that as a signaling mechanism to replace individual evaluation.
