  1. 4th street diner will get you a meal for 7.87 and its within walking distance (main and 4th). Looks, feels, smells like a diner.

If you’re willing to spend a little more, drive into the fan and pick a spot on main street…lots of good stuff going on there. White dog can be reasonable. Dogwood, Six Burner quite nice. There’s a new place where stella’s used to be thats supposed to be good, too.

I’ll bet all the non-profit employees reading your blog are jealous of the digs…swanky indeed. Is the event there or are you staying there or both? If staying, go to the Jeff bar late night. good spot for a nightcap. Sorry I’ll miss the event.

  2. $7.87 is what I pay at my Richmond haunt for the first dinner of my GA trips… Two chalupas and some other bad Mexican food at a Taco Bell just past Phillip Morris on Broad Street in Henrico.

  3. Oooh, I went to 4th St. Diner once, a month or so ago, and it was great. I’m totally going there for dinner.

The event is here and we’re staying here, which is great. The place is so fancy that it turned out that our missing luggage wasn’t stolen — it had been taken up to our room. D’oh.

  4. Shaun–

I assume you mean amazed by the beer, not the food…although this is coming from the guy who recommended 4th street…

maybe capitol ale not so bad after all.

  5. You could head out to Short Pump and get a slice of cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory.

  6. Cheesecake Factory, my ass. I’ve been there. No factory. Just cheesecake. They make ’em someplace else. In Mexico, I suspect, along with the rest of the manufacturing jobs.

Get off my lawn, you damned kids!

    *shakes fist*

  7. The 4th street diner is ok. The 3rd street diner is great. I used to live a few blocks from there at Trolley Square. Head over around 5:00 and you’ll see a bunch of cops, goth kids, working stiffs and bankers all hanging out together. Drinking Legend Lager, eating a ‘fried-D-with’ and listening to The Clash. That’s how it was back in the late 90’s, anyway.

    Ahh, the memories.

  8. Might need to get in your car to drive, but head over to Carytown Burger and Fries. When I want to just eat a good, sloppy, bad for you kind of burger thats where I go; great fries and real cherry coke. You never leave hungry!

  9. For your 7.87, you will get about one glass of wine at the Jeff bar — but it’s a great political hangout when we are in town. Which, sadly, will be a whole lot in the near future. If you’re still down on Sunday night, join a bunch of Dems for a drink.

  10. I’m embarrassed to report that 3rd Street is what I meant. I get the two confused. Glad you found the right one.

  11. I can’t remember the name of the restaurant because I’ve been there only once, but it’s on Main Street about a block or two west of the 3rd Street Diner (on the same side of the street). It sits on the corner. Anyway, it offers African cuisine. If you go for lunch, you select from a small buffet of whatever has been cooked for the day — and you pay by the pound! The food is blow-you-away delicious. The decor is ordinary but you do get to listen to Afro-pop. I would think that the restaurant would appeal to your eclectic tastes, Waldo.

  12. It’s funny, Jim — I walked right by that on the way to the Third Street Diner that night. It was the only restaurant that I walked by. I was really interested, based on the name and the look of the place. I walked up to it and saw, inside, a buffet table with steamed-up clear covers over the hot dishes, a dozen small tables, and a counter in back. A woman sat at the counter, reading. Nobody was sitting at any of the tables. I thought it was a little weird that nobody else was there, and so I stuck by my original plan to go to the Third Street Diner.

But I’d thought about it since. The fact that nobody was there should have had little impact on my decision. And I think I would have preferred West African (which is what I think they had) over the burger and fries that I got. You’ve convinced me to head back there sometime, Jim. :)

  13. I am late to this thread!!

Ok first things first, 3rd Street sucks. 4th Street on the other hand KICKS ASS. Don’t let anyone tell you different. I mean if you are a high school kid out past curfew you might want to go to 3rd St. ; )

Second, Cafe Ole is pretty amazing and right by the capitol on 6th and Main. If you go there on Tuesday you can get the best fish tacos in town, I’m not even kidding. Plan a trip now. NOW!

If you are interested in going down into the bottom you should check out Zuppa, whose address I can’t quite remember. It is right next to Tiki Bobs, so maybe like 15th and Franklin? Zuppa makes ridiculously good soup. The she crab soup and grilled cheese is delicious.
