  1. I’d have liked to see Creigh Deeds on there. But I just voted for Webb. Either of them is capable of beating Allen. This Harris guy is baby shit number 19. Allen will take one look at him and laugh. Ditto for Leslie Byrne, L.F. Payne and what’s-his-name who was Lt. Governor a bajillion years ago.

It’s gotta be Webb or Deeds. Anyone else would be token opposition and a waste of money that should go to top-tier pickup opportunities like TN and MT. We don’t need any Katherine Harris-type money pit races. Leave that foolishness to the GOP.

  2. full disclosure, I’m one of the leaders of the “Draft Webb” movement over at RK.

That being said, the more I learn about Webb the more I think his candidacy could make a huge difference for Democratic politics in the Commonwealth. This is a guy who would draw votes from Reagan Democrats, Perot Voters, Shenandoah voters, Blacks, Asians, and even Less-Educated, Lower-Income white males.

Webb would compete favorably in every area of Virginia: NOVA, Tidewater, Capital and Shenandoah. There’s no other Dem who can comptete at this level. Moreover, remember that John Warner will have to resign someday, who’s going to take up for Virginia’s military interests? Somebody’s got to do it, and it sure ain’t Allen. Allen’s going to be tilting at windmills in ’08, who’s goign to be watching out for Virginia?

  3. Deeds might make it but he won’t do it. The others are totally unknown and any bet on them is Vegas odds.

Having said that, Miller has the best chance between Webb and he simply because of Fairfax.

  4. ?reality?
Well, I have to agree that I don’t think Deeds will run. Democrats need to learn that Virginia is not Fairfax alone, any more than America is New York alone.

Rural Americans need to be taken seriously. When Democrats like Mark Warner have represented the interests of rural voters they have responded.

If the Democratic party ever wants to achieve anything more than minority status, we must learn that represent America we need to represent all of America.

That’s a lesson that Republicans should learn as well.

  5. You are certainly entitled to your opinon, Ms. Marshall. I strongly disagree.

If you are basing your assessment of Mr. Webb’s candidacy on his record in the Navy you may be interested to know that under his leadership more billetts were opened to women than under any Secretary before or since.

As I learn more about Mr. Webb I am more and more impressed.

  6. Somehow the 5th District seems like a good battle for Creigh Deeds. I’d like to see him go toe-to-toe with Virgil Goode.

While I love Al Weed and I deeply respect Bern Ewert, I think that Creigh would make the race competitive in a way that neither of them possibly could.

  7. Alice: With all due respect, what on earth do you base your assessment on regarding James Webb? I’ve met him and researched his background; do you know something I don’t know? Among other things, Webb has been against the Iraq war since at least September 2002. I also agree with everything Josh says here about Webb. The bottom line question I’ve got for you is this, “do you want to get rid of George Allen and replace him with a straight-talkin’, straight-shootin’ Dem?” If not, why not?

  8. Bath County is in the 6th? mmm…

Any chance we’ll see Deeds vs Goodlatte in ’06?

Goodlatte’s great on High Tech issues, but didn’t he champion Bush’s “Slash, Burn, and Profiteer” forrestry initiative?
