Daily Press endorses Kaine.

In a strongly-worded editorial today, the Hampton Roads Daily Press endorsed Lt. Governor Tim Kaine for governor. They oppose Jerry Kilgore for his decided lack of conservatism on any important issue, his government-by-referendum plan that would turn Virginia into California, describing him as a candidate who has achieved just one thing in the race, and that’s demonstrating that he’s unworthy of winning. On the other hand, they describe Kaine’s case for election as “a strong one,” the man as having “all the potential for being a superb and successful chief executive.”

More than anything, though, they seem to prefer Kaine’s history of and commitment to supporting Governor Warner’s work towards smaller, smarter, fiscally-sound government. Kilgore has promised to roll back all of Warner’s overwhelmingly popular achievements. And so, the Daily Press concludes, “it’s an easy choice.” Tim Kaine for governor.

  1. As someone who has known Tim Kaine for 25 years, as an elected member of the Richmond School Board and as a Virginia Citizen, I must thank the Daily Press for its well-reasoned and eloquent endorsement of Tim Kaine for Governor. “It’s an easy choice” for me as well. May we all stand tall with our votes for him on November 2, 2005.

  2. [Kilgore’s plan] “…would turn Virginia into California.”

I think this would make a great Kaine commercial that would really resonate.

  3. Other than abortion, where Kilgore and Kaine have the same position (kill as many fetuses as possible), these candidates stand in stark contrast. This is a good endorsement for Kaine.

  4. “Kill as many fetuses as possible.”

You can make your point about both candidates being unwilling to criminalize women and their physicians who abort fetuses, without intentionally distorting the positions of the candidates. You know that it’s not true that either one of them want to maximize the number of abortions. It’s this kind of inflamatory rhetoric that makes abortion opponents look like nut cases. Tell the truth.

  5. OK – both Jerry Kilgore and Tim Kaine want to kill millions of fetuses a year. They desperately want to make sure that women have the right to kill fetuses. Little babies that look like people. In fact, Jerry Kilgore was recently asked at a debate whether he’d favor punishment for people who perform this murderous procedure and he refused to condemn it!

  6. Cut the Crap, you’re still not being honest. There are plenty of moral arguments for you to make, but you know that Jerry Kilgore and Tim Kaine don’t “want to kill millions of fetuses a year”. First of all, since they’re neither women nor physicians, they won’t have an opportunity to do so, will they?

So, now, you may want to suggest that they will permit the killing of millions of fetuses a year. Maybe, but not the same as killing them is it?

Would you agree that people who work for and own stock in tobacco companies kill millions of people a year? Would you also agree that politicians who don’t make tobacco use illegal are killing millions of people each year?

Permitting others to make what we consider to be immoral, harmful or dangerous choices is not the same thing as committing the act yourself. But, you knew that, didn’t you?

  7. Ok, you’re probably right. Let’s just agree that both Tim Kaine and Jerry Kilgore support a woman’s right to abortion on demand.

  8. I’d say you’ve got it right – both Tim Kaine and Jerry Kilgore agree that government ought not to interfere with a woman’s right to abortion on demand. I’ll bet they’d both like some limitations on that right, though (as would most Virginians).

So, folks are going to have to choose our next governor on some other basis than their position on abortion.

  9. They should look at taxes. Jerry Kilgore wants to increase taxes regionally. Think of it: A regional income tax in northern Virginia. Meanwhile, the rest of the state will continue to pump money out of the region…and probbaly at a greater level, since we’ll have our own money to pay for roads.
