Yesterday I stumbled across the MySpace page of Dustin Matthews, with whom I hiked more than a few miles on the Appalachian Trail in 1996 (trail name “Comet Kid”), and was surprised to read that he died a couple of years ago. He was only a few years older than me. From what I can …

A happy ending for the kittens.
Remember those ridiculously cute kittens we were fostering? They’ve got a person now. A fellow in Staunton saw those photos of ’em here, and he took them home on Thursday. It’s nice that these sisters will stay together. Lady Bird is awfully glad to have them gone — our poor beagle is terrified of cats.
Mama cat.
This is the mother of the two kittens we’re fostering. She’ll need a home in a week’s time. The black and white kitten is growing a lot faster than the gray one — it appears this two-kitten litter has a runt.
Foster family of kittens.

“End women’s suffrage now!”
Hampshire College students are demanding their school become actively anti-racist, and have made 17 specific demands of their school. My favorite? Segregated student housing. FAIL.

(Plus, these things are built so terribly that they’ll never last, …

Joining the Commonwealth Quest.
I wrote about Craig Fifer’s Commonwealth Quest two and a half years ago, and ever since I’ve wondered how many Virginia municipalities I’ve visited. My wife and I just took twenty minutes to review a map of Virginia and figure it out. Here’s the list: Counties I’ve Been To Accomack Albemarle Amelia Amherst Appomattox Arlington …
Senate in session.
Fully half of their one-hour session was spent acknowledging and applauding groups in the gallery. Each group left as soon as they’d been acknowledged, and soon the packed gallery was empty. The process reminds me of commendations — a nice, well-intentioned thing that’s gotten out of control.
