  2. It’s a bit amazing that Mass is so high on the list. Their population is a fraction of CA and less than Virginia’s.

    I’m not sure it’s that easy, on a couple of fronts. First, much of this is is basically sorted by population: California and New York on one end, Wyoming and North Dakota on the other. Second, it’s not entirely clear what a “red state” and a “blue state” are anymore, especially when dealing with state-level matters. For much of this period, for instance, California and Massachusetts both had Republican governors.
