In the third quarter of 2010, American businesses had the most profitable quarter, ever, in the history of such things. What with our socialist president, communist congress, and crushing regulations, that's quite remarkable, isn't it? Perhaps socialism is working out for us.

My only working knowledge of stoning comes from "Life of Brian." Here's an illustrated guide to how it works. It's a great deal more awful than I was aware. Though, now that I think about it, I can't see that it's a great deal better than, say, the electric chair.

Some thoughts on high-prestige, low-satisfaction jobs. I know a lot of folks in jobs like this. They're traps. Run away!

Yeah, socialism is great.

I see a near-doubling of unemployment under “capitalism” (4.7% in January 2001, 8.5% in January 2009) and then basically no more ground being lost under “socialism” (8.5% in January 2009, 9% now).
Interesting.
I hate my job. It provides no challenges, I’m under-appreciated, and my best skills are going unused. It pays very well and the benefits are top-notch. So, while I’m miserable, I try to remind myself that I’m lucky to even have a job in this economy, not to mention one that provides its employees with top-notch benefits.
In other words, I feel an extreme amount of guilt for being miserable in my job.
Where did we get this notion that people are supposed to love their jobs?
You’re supposed to hate your job, that’s why it’s a “job.” If you liked it, it would be recreation.
You’re supposed to hate your boss too.;-)
Oh, man, there’s an added twist that I hadn’t even thought about. FWIW, I think it’s reasonable to be simultaneously grateful to be employed and also unhappy with your employment—no guilt required.
I’ve started to evaluate life decisions in terms of happiness, and I think it’s basically working out. Entertaining an offer of a relatively prestigious job in D.C. earlier this year, I didn’t have to think about it long—I don’t want to live in D.C., because it would make me unhappy. End of decision process.
The only good part of the story is that there has “only” been one stoning (documented at least) in 2010. If we complain will that just lead to more stonings.
Publius,
Stop driving on my socialist streets and using my socialist county services.
And while you are at it, tell your parents to forget Social Security and Medicare.
Idiot.
