  • O noes! Republicans in Congress are going to cooperate less than not at all! They're very sad that they lost a vote, and so now they're *really* going to show those darned Democrats by completely giving up. Yeah, Democracy is tough when you're on the losing end, but is there not one Republican wearing big-girl panties in the whole of Congress?
  • By snubbing months of Democrats' efforts to involve them in crafting the health care bill, Republicans are left with nothing to do but root for the failure of America's health care system. Between now and the November election, bajillions of people are going to get health care who could never get it before, and people will discover that none of the ridiculous scare tactics employed by Republicans (death panels, socialism, massive tax hikes) amount to anything. They're the party that cried "wolf."
  • An analysis of 52 paintings of The Last Supper spanning a thousand years has found that the quantity of food on the plates has increased by 70%, the size of the plates by a corresponding 65%, and the quantity of bread by 23%.
  • The average height of an American male in 1779 was one inch shorter than today. I thought there was a much larger difference than that, at least based on the tiny doorways in houses from the eighteenth century. Jefferson, at six feet, two and one half inches, was perceived as being as tall as somebody my size, 6'4", would be today.

  1. Between now and the November election, bajillions of people are going to get health care who could never get it before,

I support the healthcare reform effort…but how is it that the bajillions will have health care that could never get it before…

How is it that supposed to happen?

I don’t have health care insurance, and could use a break on the money I spend on medication.

Health insurance companies are now prohibited from considering preexisting conditions at the time of enrollment. Many people with existing health problems cannot get health insurance for that reason, but when this law takes effect, they will no longer be excluded.

  3. You raise the issues of the height of the doorways in Monticello and Jefferson’s height, which raises an old question of mine: why did Jefferson have his house made with door frames that even he nearly had to duck to get through? I mean, add the height of a powdered wig, puffed up from the Virginia humidity, and I doubt he could make it through.

It’s always mystified me. I guess they’re probably just not as short as I remember or perceived them as.

  4. Another provision that takes effect immediately, as of the signing of the bill on Tuesday, is that people from the age of 18-26 will now be allowed to stay on their parents insurance policies.

That should be good for at least one bajillion.

  5. And when is that part of this law supposed to take effect?

This year. Actually, there’s sort of a training-wheels version this year, and the full-blown version gets underway in four years. But this year, anybody who can’t get insurance because of a pre-existing condition, and hasn’t had coverage for at least six months, can get on a temporary program, to tide them over until 2014.

  6. I mean, add the height of a powdered wig, puffed up from the Virginia humidity, and I doubt he could make it through.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think Jefferson was ever a powdered wig wearer.

  7. You know what Christ’s last words at the Last Supper were, right?

“Okay, everybody who wants to be in the picture, get on this side of the table.”

  8. It’s not so much news that Republicans in the House and Senate are going to stop cooperating with their Democratic colleagues. What surprises the fuck out of me is the notion that they’d ever started.

  9. Where is the information about that “temporary program to tide them over until 2014”?
