I made this custard-based ice cream on Wednesday night, turning about 3/4 of it into straight-up vanilla ice cream. The remainder I swirled with some homemade caramel sauce. The result is really great—creamy, rich, smooth. Vanilla ice cream bores me, and I never bother with the stuff, but this I like.

Your comments on the first article are interesting to me. The Recovery Act increased benefits more than 13%, so you have to wonder how much of the new enrollment is a result of the increased incentives to be in the program. Definitely an interesting policy dilemma.
It’s worth pointing out, for those who don’t read the article, that it was President Clinton who began to increase funding to the food stamps program, but President Bush followed up and did likewise, with President Obama just following in their footsteps.
You can skip the cooking step for the ice cream and just put it right into the ice cream maker if you trust the source of your eggs.
