In 2007, an artist in Seattle made a counterfeit penny out of gold, clad in copper, and put it into circulation. He was fascinated by the idea of a counterfeit worth more than what it pretends to be. Then, this summer, it turned up again. (As bad pennies are said to do.)

According to the article, the penny was dated 1970 but put into circulation in 2007 (also the Seattle artist was in Los Angeles at the time).
