Virginia Route 40.

Wikipedia points out that Route 40 is the longest primary state highway in Virginia. I’ve driven across it now and again, but I’d never paid it any mind. Turns out it runs 229 miles, clear from Woolwine (just north of Martinsville) to Spring Grove (across the river from Williamsburg). Along the way it passes through Ferrum, Rocky Mount, Gretna, Brookneal, Charlotte Court House, Keysville, Lunenburg, Blackstone, Stony Creek (crossing 95), and Waverly before just about running out of land by the time it winds up at its eastern terminus. It was first established in 1933, courtesy of Gov. Harry Byrd’s efforts to “get Virginia out of the mud,” and reached its current length by 1936.

Thinking the 5 hour 31 minute drive might be a nice way to spend a day? I mapped the route for you.

  1. I’ve driven Rt. 40 from Brookneal to Spring Grove. A word to the wise: don’t speed too much. Nevertheless, I’m shocked that a global warming enthusiast such as yourself would advocate such a frivolous use of gasoline when we’re broiling under the heat of a Virginia summer. What was it today, like 77 F maybe?

I also advocate using computers just for fun, crazy guy that I am.

It was nice today, but the first half of the year was the second hottest on record, and the over-land surface temperature was the hottest ever. Since we seem to set these records just about every year, I suspect we’ll find is true for the year on the whole, too.

But, hey, soon we’ll be able to grow hardiness-zone 8 plants here, so that’s nice.

  3. I think US 40 is the longest continuous road in Colorado, where, in Denver it is known as Colfax Ave. Just a coincidence on the road number.

I runs across eastern Colorado, all the way to the mountains, and Golden, CO. (through downtown Denver)
