God hates podcasts?

Johnny Camacho interviewed Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church, and his recap of the hour-long discussion is as interesting as the discussion itself. He had a realization about the church’s motivations — they say nasty things in order to be hated, rather than say things that they think are true which happen to make them hated — that I think is spot-out.

  1. He nailed it here:

So, I told her something sure to make her uncomfortable… “I love you.” In fact, I had quite a good time telling her that over and over again. She got very, very mad, and decided that the conversation should move along.

Christ taught his disciples to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Sometimes it infuriates them, sometimes it totally disarms them, but they’re never quite prepared to receive love and kindness in payment for their venom and malice.

  2. Thanks, Cory — I’ve corrected that.

You’re right, Jon. It was in that moment that Johnny came out on top in that discussion. Making members of the WBC look stupid is look shooting fish in a barrel, and when Johnny wrote that he planned on having her on his show, I cringed. It’s become somewhat of a sport for TV and radio shows to have these yahoos on and to lampoon them, because it’s so easy. But Johnny managed to get the best of her on her own terms, without mocking her, but by hewing more closely to her stated beliefs than she does. Very impressive.

  3. I read this very early this morning.

My Dad always had a saying, and he uses this theory all the time. His theory is to ‘nice’ people until they can’t stand it anymore. I try it, but my passion and willingness to say something usually gets the best of me.

I think that people such as this lady who claim to be so righteous and religious have no tolerance for even the nice responses from someone. It must be that if someone does not swallow the line with the hook and sinker, it just isn’t good enough.

Whatever happened to tolerance? Johnny certainly showed it, and this woman appears to be incapable of it.

  4. I’ve been in the bunker since last night when I did that interview, waiting to hear the public reaction. It’s been surprisingly positive. Thanks Waldo, Jon, Mark, and Cory.

Waldo, my intent, from the time I initially conceived the idea, was to remain as civil as I could when talking to her. I, of course, fully expected that civility was not a courtesy that would be extended to me by Mrs. Phelps-Roper.

There were times when I had to force myself to keep my mouth shut, and my head level. However, when it became obvious that she was trying her hardest to wrest from me an outraged, hateful response, I found myself all the more determined to keep my words at least somewhat cordial for the remainder of the interview.

Apparently, that was an okay strategy.

  5. The problem you all have is your definitions of civil and polite are warped. You think it’s “polite” to lie people to hell. You think it’s “civil” to pretend feces-eating fags should be given respect. This entire nation stands truth on its head, and you suppose by multiplying words you can change the standard of God.

The fact remains, this nation has institutionalized sin, and is full of arrogance and pride. You have sinned away your final day of grace. This nation is doomed.

Everything you say or do is just a giant chair shuffle on the Titanic. The only hope is if you get a Bible, read it, and obey.

    Magormissabib.

  6. For those of you who, like me, were unawares of what “Magormissabib” means, it appears to be something like Homeland Security raising the alert level to red.

    Cool.

And yes, I love you, too, Margie.

  7. And then Jesus said: But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
    (Matthew 23:13)
