  1. My theory is that if you can’t pronounce Poisson, you have bigger problems, whether it being a) you don’t know a word of French or b) you’ve never so much as seen “The Little Mermaid.” :)

  2. Is it JAY-kwith or JAH-kwith?

JAY-kwith. But that will have to wait for a “5 totally random people whose names you’re probably mispronouncing.” :)

How about Virgil GUDE or GOOD?

Jeez, I hadn’t even considered that a lot of people don’t know how to pronounce his name. Though perhaps his recent infamy on the matter of Islam has helped with that.

  3. I heard “Virgil GOOD” more than once during the national media coverage of the flap over his letter.

  4. It might be clearer to use “lights” rather than “lytes” in the Devolites pronunciation, so there’s no way to misinterpret an extra syllable into it. That was one I was mispronouncing. I knew #1. I knew the stress for #4 but admit I was unsure about “SAB” versus “SAHB”. As for #3 and #5, I’ve never had occasion to refer to them at all but likely would have mispronounced them if I had.

And yes, Goode should be on the list.

I don’t mispronounce Goodlatte, but I do always think “Good latte” when I see it, which makes him sound like one of us effete city-dwelling liberal types. I look forward to Republican politicians named Nicesushi and Excellentnewyorktimes.
