Josh Chafetz explains in Slate:

Under current federal law, it’s a criminal offense to refuse to appear before Congress when summoned or to commit perjury before a congressional committee.

  1. Did someone say Supreme Court in an expedited proceeding?

Either that, or Rice could get arrested, I suppose. Is this the offense that is given to the US Attorney to prosecute? That could cause some problems.

I read somewhere that if Rice wanted to claim any privledge, such as the Fifth Amendment or Executive Privledge, she would be required to appear and say so to each question, or at least until the committee asks whether there will be any other answer.

  2. That’s right. (my previous post)

I read it on the previous thread. I can store it, but beyond that, I can’t tell you where I saw something.

    I must be getting old.

  3. “Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod” ?

Is it any wonder that Americans have a fascination with all things British? I mean who else can put the Pomp in the Circumstance like these folks? America really should do something special for Britain, perhaps a Millennium Achievement Award from Hollywood for Contributions to the Language – facilitating our Harry Potter fetish.

  4. Can Waxman demand that Rice tell us just what the hell she has been doing in her 2 years and 3 months as Secretary of State? Sitting with the President and VP Cheney, nodding your head is not an achievement. I mean Governor Bill Richardson seems to be able to negotiate international peace treaties, tame the North Koreans, run the State of New Mexico, AND campaign for President.

She reminds me of William Rogers, Nixon’s Sec. of State. While Rogers was hosting state dinners, Hank Kissinger was out plotting the destruction of Cambodia and negotiating with the Chinese. Perhaps Bush should just award her the Medal of Freedom, send her back to Stanford and let Kissinger take over – that would bring this ugliness full circle. Hank could once again have a deck chair on a sinking ship.

  5. Wow, from my reading of that article, it sounds like the Congress can just form a posse and grab people who refuse subpoenas? That’s awesome!

(It would be scary, on the other hand, if it were a smaller, less contentious group. :-P)
