  1. This poor candidate is so doomed. It’s as if someone wanted to come up with a parody of a doomed Congressional candidate from Charlottesville. It’s funny how some people can spend years studying what they think is politics and yet when they step out into the real political world right in their backyard they so clearly have no clue what they’re doing.

The only way that this guy could get anywhere would be if he got the nomination and Virgil dropped dead a week before the election. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a good idea to have a candidate in every hopeless race in case this happens. But Shreve really is on a fast, expensive track to nowhere. He’ll spin his wheels and attract people to his campaign who are equally clueless who tell him flattering things about how he can win. And he’ll spend thousands and thousands of dollars of his own money and waste thousands and thousands of dollars of other people’s money. At the end of the day, he’ll either lose the primary or walk away from the general election with a big, fat, 37%.

Mr. Shreve, I’ve watched so many of your ilk waste years of their lives and flush their bank accounts down the toilet on this sort of thing. Save yourself the torment. Some people have it and others don’t. You don’t. Not for the 5th District as it’s currently drawn, anyway. Maybe if Charlottesville was it’s own CD you’d have a shot. But it isn’t and you don’t. They’re gonna take one look at you and your academic resume down there in Southside and laugh you right out of town. You’ll be ‘the effete liberate professor from Charlottesville.’ A latte-sipping liberal charactature that even the Democrats down there in Rocky Mount won’t want to put yard signs up for. Defining and attacking you will be so easy that Virgil will hardly have to lift a finger. Look at a map of the 5th CD. You are doomed.

  2. no way, no how
when will you Charlottesville cats learn??? Whats next, Al Weed Part 3???

  3. A viable candidate will need to come from the Martinsville, Henry County,Patrick County area. He MUST be a moderate Democrat and he must be more familiar with the economic woes of the Southside.
While this man may be smart and politically savvy, he doesn’t stand a chance I am sorry to say.

  4. Judge Smails,

I’ve watched this same story unfold too many times to pull any punches. Better to let these guys know the hard truth up front and let them see exactly how rough it’s going to get.

  5. One of the things seldom told is that President Johnson, like Kennedy before him, only recorded those things he wanted recorded so whatever Shreve studied is olny what Johnson wanted studied. The Johnson family economic double dealings and political vote buying in east Texas are legendary. The other seldom told is that the Kennedys still control who listens to the Kennedy tapes and have been erasing uncomplimentary parts for years.

Shreve stands no chance. He will be lucky to get 37%.
