UVa president calls for same-sex partner benefits.

Daily Progress: UVa President John Casteen says the school has to offer benefits to domestic partners in order to stay competitive with the private sector. Decisions like this are where the rubber meets the road for conservatives. What’s more important — following the dictates of the free market, or legislating morality?

  1. That’s a great point, Cory. I can’t believe I forgot about Amendment 1 passing. What’s it been, 3 months?

Still, it’s for Virginia courts to construe the Virginia Constitution, not ones from Michigan.

Wonder why there was no mention of Amendment 1 and its impact on decisions like the one Casteen was talking about.

  2. C’mon, people: This is Virginia! You don’t really think the GA would ever let UVa do this, do you?

  3. “legislating morality,” Waldo?!?!?

I thought I put that pretty politely. The objection to extending benefits to same-sex partners is generally a moral objection. Thus, this is an issue which separates the fiscal conservatives from the social conservatives.

Oh, THOSE are the fun ones. Like Immigration! Everybody wins! Right?!?!
