ABC News: President Bush intends to nominate U.S. ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad to become the new ambassador to the U.N. Two points to the first reporter who asks Rep. Virgil Goode whether he will support President Bush’s nominee in spite of his religion.

  1. Smart move on Bush’s part. Remarkable how he did a complete about-face from more or less the worst possible nominee to one of his shrewdest diplomatic moves ever. Which isn’t saying a whole lot given Bush’s track record of bungling diplomacy but I have to give the man credit where it is due in this case.

    We really are seeing a whole new George W. Bush since his party was defeated in November. The Democratic party’s ascendance to power is probably the best thing that ever happened to his presidency. He’s actually been forced to make a serious effort at doing his job well for the last few months. Come to think of it, Bill Clinton probably wouldn’t have been half as good a President as he eventually became if the GOP hadn’t captured the House in 1994.
