In Richmond today.

I’m spending the day in Richmond today, as a part of my ongoing effort to blog from the General Assembly each week. There are lots of interesting meetings today, so I should keep busy.

This week is brought to you by Duane Gran and Alton Foley.

This week is also brought to you by mathematics. The mathematics that prevented me and, apparently any of the thousands of other daily readers of this blog, from realizing that $12 + $15 = $27, not $37. Consequently, next week will also be brought to you by Duane Gran and Alton Foley.

And the letter Q and the number 7.

  1. Darn! I wish I thought to tell you I’d be in Richmond today. We could have met up! Anyway… here’s my notes from my fun day.

I decided to head up today to try attending Mark’s swearing in today. With construction on the State House, all the proceedings are taking place in a building nearby. On my way there, I shook Gov. Kaine’s hand, said hello, and told him my business in Richmond. He told me that I had just missed it but that he was very proud of Mark. That building is unfortunately not open to the public so I head back to the State Office Building. I inquired as to what room Senator Herring would be assigned. While waiting I said hello to Delegate Brian Moran and Stewart Scwartz from the Coalition for Smarter Growth. Of course, they are both thrilled with Mark’s win. I head up to Mark’s new office and met his secretary. (BTW… she informed me that Adrienne Marra, Sen. Mim’s aide, had moved to Virginia Beach. Small world!) I left a note for Mark then headed up to see Delegate Poisson, whose office is right next to Delegate Joe May’s who I also had the opportunity to say hello to. David wasn’t in but I had a very nice chat with Dave’s legislative aide, Bob G. Then David arrived and invited me to accompany him back to the State House building where we attended a reception for Mark. I chatted with Senator Waddell and said howdy to Senator Deeds. On my way out, I bumped into former Senator and now Deputy AG Bill Mims. He told me just to call him “Bill”. Bill is going to ask AG McDonnell about possible jobs in VA Beach. Isn’t that nice? Back at the Office building I went to visit my new legislators Del. Terrie Suit and Senator Ken Stolle. Neither were in but I left them notes. Then I bumped into Memory Porter, Loudoun’s legislative aide. She invited me to join her in grapping some soup on the 6th floor then heading back to her office in the Patrick Henry building. (Also bumped into EV’s Claire Gastanaga and had a little chuckle comparing notes from the campaign trail. Funny stuff!) We watched on TV Mark’s first session where he was first introduced and welcomed, which included some very nice remarks from Senator Russ Potts. Another Senator whose name I didn’t catch, welcomed Mark, talked about how he had very big shoes to fill in the 33rd (following Mims and Waddell), another also mentioned Mark’s outstanding background in land use matters and how thrilled he was to have him in Richmond. Great day!

  2. You’re welcome! I forgot to mention that I said a quick hello to Whitt Clement. I wish we could have chatted more coz I love his accent! I also gave a hearty congrats to the hottest campaign manager in all of Virginia, Andy Resnick, at Mark’s reception. I understand Harris Miller has just hired him.
