Amateur sleuth.

I spent some time at the city and county courthouses today. Looks like the owner of the car that hit me has quite a rap sheet. Breaking and entering, grand larceny, disorderly conduct, driving with a suspended license, driving without a license, reckless driving, assault and battery, damage to private property, driving without a registration… The list goes on. It sounds like this guy has already been legally barred from driving (and drinking, under the conditions of his probation), and that just hasn’t done the trick. I’m surprised that he’s not in jail right now. Just last month, he was arrested on two charges of assault and battery.

Although I still don’t know if the owner of the car was one of the guys that I saw that evening, I’m hoping that he wasn’t; that would pretty much mean that he’d be the guy that was driving. Once I see a picture of him, I’ll know.

I went to the library to try and get a yearbook from Albemarle High School, but they don’t keep such things. I guess I’ll have to get an AHS student to photocopy a yearbook photo of this guy for me. I’d stake out his house and snap some pictures, but, given his conviction record, I’m guessing that could end badly. Peter pointed out to me that I should just let the police do the work. I worry that they won’t do it, or they’ll wait too long, and somehow, mystically, he’ll again escape any significant punishment. Besides, it gives me something to do, gives me a meter of progress in the case. Even if I’m not doing anything truly useful, in a legal sense, I still feel like something is getting done.
