As in a football or basketball game that suddenly changes so that a miracle comeback occurs, due to one serendipitous play, it seems presumed advantages in politics can be can be trumped by the loss of momentum. Once Allen’s smooth ride to a winning a second term lost its bandwagon momentum, he couldn’t get it back.
Your comparison to the 1993 race, in which Mary Sue Terry’s freefall benefited Allen, points at yet another mysterious force — karma. Terry lost to Allen because she ran a terrible campaign, and she was savaged by rumors/personal attacks that had nothing to do with issues. In 1993 Allen was the windshield; in 2006 Allen was the bug.
