  • Sen. Lamar Alexander is rushing to the rescue of the environment. He's got a great idea: "Find a way for utilities to make money from the CO2 produced by their coal plants." The good people of Tennessee must be honored to have such a brilliant mind at work on their behalf. He's got other brilliant ideas, like developing a "500-mile range [car] battery." Wow—who would have thought of that? Some R&D shop should put this man to work.

  • Of all of the awful hotels that I stayed at while hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1996, the most wretched was the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon, PA. During my one night there, I was sure that fortune had forsaken me. I googled it today, and it turns out that it was bought by a hiker-friendly couple in 2001, and it sounds like it's come a long way. People actually *want* to stay there now.
