I simply don’t have the time to do this justice right now, but I don’t want to fail to acknowledge the cease-and-desist order that Norfolk sent to Vivian Page. Signed by Deputy City Attorney Martha P. McGann, it’s a bit stunning in its legal overreach. A kind interpretation would be that Ms. McGann believes that she can bully Vivian. A less kind interpretation would be that got her law degree out of a box of Cracker Jacks, or perhaps Regent. (That’s right: burn.) A valid concern is raised in by the city attorney’s office—how presumably confidential personnel data came to be posted as a comment on Vivian’s site—but the method that they have chosen for sussing that out is totally inappropriate.

It’s good to see Virginia political bloggers of all parties and political persuasions defending Viv.
Vivian and I don’t agree on very much, but I believe that the Norfolk City Attorney’s office acted poorly on this. And I also believe they owe Vivian an apology. And I said so on my blog.
Vivian deserved a phone call or an email requesting she consider an edit on the comment. I am sure most of us would have been glad to do such an edit to remove a private person’s name. Such a comment could have a negative impact on the named person.
I would have to think that most of the state bloggers will have Viv’s back on this one.
Waldo, it’s spelled Paige.
