Crows can recognize individual faces and remember them for a long, long time. As somebody who recently fired a shotgun at a crow and missed, not far from my house, this makes me think unsettlingly of Tippi Hedren.

The feds are establishing a $700M facility to store samples of the world's most dangerous diseases…in the middle of Tornado Alley. What could go wrong?

This "occurs when a person, after having learned some fact, word, phrase, or other item for the first time, encounters that item again, perhaps several times, shortly after having learned it." This explains how buying a new car renders it ubiquitous within hours.

National Public Radio has an API just for accessing their transcripts. What an interesting, usual thing to do.

"They" is verboten as a gender-neutral pronoun ("he" is preferred), but that's actually a very recent development. For centuries, "they" was the singular pronoun of choice. Now it's staging a comeback, and for good reason, not the least of which is that "s/he" is a ridiculous construct.

Jason Schwartz should get some kind of a Daring Fireball Jackass award for this article. "The iTouch Tablet is about to change society as we know it. The demand for this product is going to overwhelm Apple." This product does not exist. It's not even vaporware. I wonder what Schwartz said about "Ginger," now known as the Segway?

While all the links seem interesting, the gender link was particularly timely for me. We just published a piece in my journal, which talked about the Latino/Latina population a lot. Other similar articles use the construct I just did––Latino/Latina or Latino/a. This author used “Latin@.” I’d never seen this before, but he told us that it was increasingly in use.
I’m not going to comment on that particular construct. I’m not sure I’m quite ready to do so without unleashing a George Carlin-esque stream of irritation. I totally adore the author I’m talking about, his article was amazing, but, really? A symbol? :)
The crow’s talent for facial recognition reminds me of the essay Browning Porter broadcast on WVTF recently, wherein he recounts how swallows recognize (and celebrate) his father, year after year, in gratitude for the time his dad rescued a baby swallow from the jaws of a blacksnake. Listen to Browning’s story here: http://tinyurl.com/browningbirdessay
I rescued a toad from the mouth of a snake last month and the ungrateful little bastard will hardly even look at me. He goes right back into his little toad-cave like I’m not even there. He’s fully recovered so I’m letting him back into the wild tonight.
Maybe the other toads will celebrate me next year.
I punched a cow once. Now I’m lactose intolerant.
Bastards.
Waldo, a very very good friend of mine just spent some time out at Apple’s campus . . . the tablet does exist.
My understanding was that they were thinking of it as a Kindle killer, don’t know about the fantastic claims made by Schwartz . . . but he did fail to mention that the mifi is also sold by sprint. very useful tool.
Oh, I don’t doubt at this point that Apple has plenty of prototypes, or even that right now they’re planning on shipping on final version of it. But it’s not yet a product. It’s not for sale. It won’t necessarily go on sale. So what we’ve got is a review of a product by a guy who has never seen it, has no idea what features that it includes, doesn’t even know what it’ll be called, but he’s sure that it will “change society as we know it” and will “overwhelm Apple.” That’s the part that’s ridiculous.
Wow, those recipes are so simple and so many sound freaking delicious.
I’ve cooked from those recipes for the past few nights, and they’re really panning out. Tonight I made the prosciutto-tomato sandwiches and the salad with blue cheese and sauteed prosciutto, last night it was the stuffed tomatoes (which I baked; the recipe mysteriously leaves the whole affair uncooked) and the night before the sauteed lamb steak. All have taken me significantly longer than ten minutes, but it’s because in every case I’ve been cooking something I’ve never cooked before, using a technique I’ve never used, but they’re still fast and summery.
Well I went out and bought some mussels tonight. Haven’t tried anything on the list but I’m already making my own changes. Basically combining #5 and #65 with the mussels instead of squid.
And while at the store (can’t believe I haven’t made this yet for my daughter) I picked #101: Franks and beans!
