Senate candidate walking across Tennessee.

A Nashville attorney seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate is walking from Memphis to Knoxville. That’s totally great. More candidates and officeholders should walk the length of their district. I’ve walked across Tennessee, too, but along the opposite axis, which is rather less impressive.

  1. This was done in Illinois years ago. The coincidentally named Dan Walker announced his candidacy for Governor of Illinois in 1972, after attracting wide attention by walking 1,197 miles (1,926 km) across the north-south length of Illinois in 1971.
He was not reelected, and after his term was over, he was convicted of “improprieties” relating to an S&L with which he was affiliated.
