Lost counties, cities, and towns of Virginia.

I love this Wikipedia entry on Virginia locations that have ceased to exist, as such. One whole county became Kentucky. Dozens of counties became Kanawha, later renamed West Virginia. Some towns became military bases during wartime. Southeast Virginia lost a great many small towns to municipal growth in the mid 1900s. Basic City became Waynesboro. Boyd’s Ferry was wiped out by the Dan River; after rebuilding nearby, it became South Boston. Henricus was wiped out by an Indian massacre. Even Woolen Mills had its own school and police force before it was absorbed into Charlottesville.

  1. I didn’t check the list yet, but I think I live in and around a couple of those defunct towns. I actually live in Guinea Mills, and live down the road from Hillcrest. Even people who liver here have problems with the first one.

Trent’s Mill, Sunnyside are also in this county. I doubt there will be any pressure in enveloping another town around here. More likely we will become a suburb of Farmville, whose growth is through the roof. ($500+m retail – 2006)
