Outer Banks wildlife.

Beach Flower

The more that I learn about the natural world around me — the names of the birds, the distribution of flowers — the more that I learn while traveling. Laughing gulls wheel overhead here, like so many cardinals at home. But so do brown headed cowbirds, which are a constant presence in our yard. The grasses are entirely unfamiliar, and many of the flowers look like something I’d plant in the garden, too precious to grow in the wild. So I photograph everything, to check in my Sibley or through the magic of the internet. Everything becomes familiar eventually.

  1. Dammit, Waldo. You make me jealous. I haven’t had a chance yet this year to get down to the Outer Banks. Two trips to Virginia Beach were okay…..but hardly the Banks. Good photograpy, as usual. Thanks.

  2. I finally got a digital SLR

Yeah, me too! I just bought a Canon 30D, and it’s supposedly being delivered today. I’m pretty psyched; I got it after continually seeing everyone’s cool photography (like Waldo’s birds) and realizing that my point-and-shoot wasn’t up to the job anymore.

Sure, I don’t know anything about photography, but you just lay down some money and the photos come, right? :)

  3. It’s been a photo bugs dream, these digital cameras are incredible for getting the “good photo”, with all it’s features, the see it now and delete it with no real loss is making it a breeze to take a decent photograph. I just bought a Nikon D-40 and using it has been great. I’ve taken photos since I was a six year old kid in Japan, the photobug nation right, and I am having the time of my life with the new camera. I like all those photo software progams where you can “paint’ on the photo or “enhanse” it, amazingly better than anything I could do in the darkroom.
I enjoy see Waldo’s photos, he has a way of getting those candid shots of birds that I just can’t see how he could do it without scaring away the subject, good shots keep up the good work. Sorry your sick, I had it last week and it went away in three days, if you have the same thing, you just need a day of rest then get back in the groove.

It’s all about taking 50 photos and only showing people the one that came out OK. :) I just returned from spending an hour at the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge. I took 228 photos of birds. Perhaps one will be nice looking. The rest will be good for IDing the sightings and nothing more than that.
