CBS forecasts House resignations.

CBS’ national political correspondent forecasts that the House’s new ethics legislation will cause “mass resignations” among representatives. Good. Republicans or Democrats, I don’t care — these new ethics regulations are just what’s needed. I was starting to suspect that the Dems weren’t going to follow through on their pre-election rhetoric.

  1. I’d *love* to see Ms. Borger be right – but I suspect there won’t be any. You’ll get some possibly qualifying but more likley hate-being-in-the-minority-take-my-ball-and-go-home Republican retirements this cycle, but that’ll be it.

  2. This bill would not have passed if it were going to cause “mass resignations.” Either it is relatively anodyne or it will die in the Senate. I’m surprised that an astute political observer like Ms. Borger would think otherwise.

  3. As a House regulation, I don’t believe there’s any need for the Senate to vote on it. But I’m inclined to agree that her forecast is pretty unlikely. I’d love to see it happen, but I can’t see how.

  4. Politicians are much more enamored of power than they care about money, golf outings, fancy dinners, and so forth.

The idea that there will be a mass exodus of Members because of new ethics rules is a lovely fantasy, but just that — fantasy.
