  1. Does this mean that Warner is not going to look for another term as Governor? I can’t imagine Creigh running against him in the primary. Warner aside, I can’t think of anyone foolish enough to challenge Creigh for the nomination. I expect he’ll have the full support of the party right away.

Normally I’d say that could mean trouble, since a vigorous primary gets a new candidate in shape for the big fight. But Creigh had the fight of his life last time around and I expect that he is as seasoned a candidate for Governor as you will ever find in Virginia. Meanwhile, the winner of the GOP primary will likely emerge both bloody and a little wiser than he started out. Although it is going to be hard to tack to the center after a big fight to win far-right votes in the primary, even as Creigh is positioned just barely right of center from day one. That’s assuming that the VA GOP ever wakes up and notices that they do need to start winning back the center in order to win state-wide races.

  2. (con’t from jack’s thought):
it appears the next race could be a repeat of the Deeds McDonnell race only this time for the big prize.

  3. Jack-

I think Brian Moran is likely “foolish” enough to take him on and I don’t think Creigh has a lock on support of the party. I love Creigh but I think Brian’s substantial money advantage and support in the more populous parts of the state will stand him in good stead in the primary.

I expect both will grudgingly, but quickly, back out if Warner decides to run.

  4. Carrington,

Moran has said in the past that he would not challenge Creigh for the nomination. I don’t know if he’s changed his mind but this is what he said last year. Moran would be just as happy to run for either Lt. Gov. or AG, either of which nominations he could secure with relative ease compared with a fight against Creigh for the top of the ticket.

I don’t know whether Brian Moran would agree with this, but Creigh (with his strong appeal to moderates and conservatives) has much better chances of winning that he does. Moran has a better chance of finding himself with a job at the end of 2009 if Creigh is at the top of the ticket and provides him with some coattails.

Moran’s biggest thing to worry about in a LG primary – Leslie Byrne. She had a much stronger showing in ’05 than anyone ever expected. Within 2 points, if memory serves. Assuming that she can get some money together and decides to get in the race, she could make some real trouble for him.

  5. Jack–

Interesting stuff. Brian sure looks like he’s running for Governor to me, but perhaps I’m missing something. You’re right that Brian will have to move to the middle–but I think he can pull that off.

As far as a primary goes, you’re right that it would be a bruiser–but given Brian’s substantial money advantage and Creigh’s (perceived, at the least) problems raising money, I think Brian will win.

Will be interesting to see, at the least.
