An anniversary rose.

Red Rose
One year later, though admittedly posted a week late.

I recently tweaked the layout of this blog to make it possible to post big versions of my photos. Looking at this, I’m glad I did so.

  1. Good point, Tom! Waldo, why don’t my images measure up to yours? Tom may be right about the camera, but I have a nice Olympus SP-500UZ with a gazillion megapixels, so I can’t blame the equipment. And while we’re at it, what’s the secret to embiggening? Stop holding back on us.

  2. This was one of two dozen pictures that I took of these dozen roses. I took half a dozen almost exactly like this, using manual focus, making a series of tiny adjustments in the focus to assure that at least one shot turned out in focus. (This is known as bracketing the focus.) I got lucky — for macro shots of still life I generally need 2x or 3x as many shots to get just one with decent focus.

I used extremely shallow depth of field so that the depths o’ the rose are out-of-focus, which serves the highlight that the tips of the petals look more in-focus. If you look at it at its biggest size you’ll see that the depth of focus is so shallow that really nothing other than the center of the swirl is in focus — it only appears to be in focus at the smaller size at which it’s reproduced here.
