  1. As much as I’m an advocate for progressive labor laws, all this off shoring is a direct response to the (relatively) high expectations for laborers in this country. It is evidently cheaper to ship wood twice around the world than to employ one’s neighbors.

At the risk of causing my head to explode, could it be the liberal policies on labor are creating an environmental nuisance?

  2. Rather than paying lip service to “family values”, there was a time when all Americans actually believed that if Americans worked hard, they should be able to enjoy the American Dream. When we value labor, we value families. Now if you don’t have a trust fund or a Master’s degree, the American dream is out of reach.

  3. The real problem is that everyone wants some good cheap stuff, but wants to get paid well with benefits, job security and a good wage. The two don’t go well together in our economy.

My dad made the same as a union carpenter when he retired in 1996 as he did in 1977. Of course, I don’t need to tell you how much the price of everything went up in that same span.

Until we can get used to the idea of buying our own products (those made in this country), even if they cost more, then the trade imbalance and huge trade deficit will continue to spiral out of control. I know certain products, like textiles, are almost dead industries in this country.

Whatever the answer, it needs to come soon.
