Home-made meals. Kind of.

Here’s a strange new trend, noted by the New York Times: Chains of food-prep kitchens where harried mothers can assemble meals in bulk, without ever having to chop, cook, or wash. I guess it’s better than pizza.

  1. My wife has done this (there is a Dream Dinners in Richmond) and really liked it. The food wasn’t bad and it was real. She got 12 complete meals (6 servings) for about $200 and a couple hours of time. Is it like you mom used to make – no, but it certainly is a time saver. And a heck of a lot cheaper than going out or ordering out.

Luckily for me, she likes cooking from scratch but it was an easy way to have several dinners ready to go if she had somehting else to do that day

  2. I imagine from the description that, for the foods that can be created that way, it’s ideal. The main problem is not that it’s not really cooking, because it is, the problem is that you only have a few cooking techniques that can be used with this setup. Anything above a certain complexity is not possible with this setup, from what I’ve seen.
