Campaigns and Elections contributing editor.

Chad Dotson and I have some great news: We’ve both been named contributing editors for Campaigns & Elections Magazine‘s new technology section. The duty that comes with this position is to write a monthly column. So Chad and I will have side-by-side columns in each issue, in which we’ll write about the overlap between technology and politics, with a focus on the political blogosphere.

C&E is, of course, the publication in the political world, so I’m flattered and a bit overwhelmed by this opportunity. The bulk of the credit for this must surely go to the Virginia political blogosphere and Marc Fisher, whose “Blogging on the Hustings” provided our community with the exposure that brought Chad and me to the attention of Campaigns & Elections. Without the Virginia political blogosphere being such a fine and productive bipartisan community, this bipartisan column pairing wouldn’t have happened.

Our first columns will be in the April issue. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, collaborating each month on our joint topic and, for the first time, writing on a deadline. Ironically (or so some would perceive it), we’re now a part of the dreaded “mainstream media.” Much like those who came of age in the 1970s eventually learning to trust anybody over 30, perhaps this will give bloggers somebody in the “MSM” that they can trust.

I hope you’ll read each month, and I know you’ll let us know what you think.

  1. Marvelous Waldo! Congratulations to you!

Ya know I have told you for years that you have the intelligence, curiosity and drive to be an outstanding investigative reporter.
So we know that a Pulitzer is in your future, but will you be affiliated with the Post or the Times?
Many, many kudos, bubbula. One caveat: Promise to remain a Democrat. :-) OK?

  2. Congratulations Waldo! Even though I’m not a Dem, I still love to read your posts. Never thought I’d go there!

    Keep up the humor!!!

  3. Waldo- I know you are probably surprised to see me over here, but I want to post the same thing here that I posted over on Commonwealth Conservative. To both of you, congrats. The founder of the magazine, Ron Faucheux, was my professor in grad school, and a great guy. He is no longer with the publication, but it is the premiere political read. Way to go guys. You will represent Virginia well.

  4. Thank you, Tucker, that’s awful nice of you to say. I really appreciate it.

And I’m not surprised, particularly — I know that if you had a blog, I’d read it every day. We might have different political views, but at the end of the day, there ain’t no reason why two hacks can’t share a beer and talk about baseball. :)

  5. Congratulations.

I guess you can always draw on past experiences to help write your column…..like your two week stint as Al Weed’s campai…..;o)

  6. kudos to both of you–you can fret about being tarred as MSM, or you can take this as what it really is: recognition that you play a unique role in the emerging redefinition of the relationships between voters and the political system, and between readers and writers.

  7. Waldo – I wanted to second Tucker’s congratulation. That’s quite an opportunity for both you and Chad. Good luck with it, and let us know when the first columns actually hit the news stands.

I’ll gladly join you and Tucker for that beer one day.

It was good to see you and Chad at the Capitol the other week.

  8. Those of us who live in God’s country are sooo proud of you. Hope to see you around the end of May. Good luck!!!

  9. Congratulations. The challenge will be if you’re able to keep the same, fresh, personal style in print as you have on your blog.

And if you do, C&E will never be the same (and that’s a good thing).
