On WINA Friday morning.

Charlottesville-area readers might be interested to know that I’ll be on WINA‘s “Charlottesville Live” tomorrow (Friday) morning for an hour, beginning a few minutes after 9am. We’ll be discussing the blogging of the General Assembly, my General Assembly RSS feeds, and related geek political matters. 1070 AM.

  1. That would make a great podcast, if someone could record it.

I was an intern in the sports department at WINA in 1995-96, back when I thought I wanted to go into radio. I had a great time there and have good memories of everyone who worked there at the time, though I ultimately decided to pursue a career in the law.

I wish I could tune in, but the WINA signal doesn’t quite make it into far Southwest Virginia.

  2. I talked to somebody at WINA a few months ago about podcasting their morning radio; he said that there were no plans to do so, but left the door open for “maybe in the future.” I won’t necessarily be holding my breath though.

  3. I can barely pick up WINA at home. I used to set my radio alarm clock to wake me up with it, but I got tired of being woken up by static. That’s a terrible way to start the day.

I think WINA would podcast if they could do it without effort. If there was a device that would record the show, convert it to MP3, and upload it to their website, sure, why not? But the return on investment isn’t obvious — blogging is like that — so I can understand their lack of initiative.

  4. There was a nice tradition in the mid to late 90s of UVa astronomy grad students (including me) doing a call in 15 minute spot on CVille Live once a month about something astronomical. I did it for about a year or so. I enjoyed it greatly, except for the one occasion where I exceeded my 15 minutes and annoyed the host.

Anyway… I had heard that as of 2001 or 2002 the show had either gone away completely or changed formats and so they didn’t want an astronomy feature anymore. Does anyone know if this has been revived?

  5. I totally forgot about that, Chris. That was awesome. Like many amateur astronomers, I rely on Sky & Telescope’s Sky at a Glance, but that doesn’t always do me much good here in Virginia.

Speaking of which…new moon this weekend! I’m hoping to put my new Canon Digital Rebel to work and see what kind of astrophotography I can with absolutely no method of affixing my camera’s body to my Orion Dobsonion. Thankfully, I have really low standards. :)
