FactCheck.org smacks down Kilgore.

A week ago, I caught Jerry Kilgore on his invented “Hitler” claim leveled at Kaine. It’s now clear that the ad backfired (more on that later), and Kilgore’s pulling the ad, but some people still haven’t gotten the memo that the Kilgore campaign completely invented their claim that Kaine said he wouldn’t execute Hitler.

Yesterday, the venerated, non-partisan group FactCheck.org stepped into the fray, writing:

A TV ad for Jerry Kilgore, Republican candidate for governor of Virginia, says of his Democratic opponent: “Tim Kaine says that Adolf Hitler doesn’t qualify for the death penalty.” Actually, Kaine didn’t say that.

They provide an extensive analysis of the Kilgore attacks, demonstrating rather clearly that the Kilgore campaign is, once again, relying on that tried-and-true tactic of Making Shit Up™.

  1. “Kilgore campaign completely invented their claim that Kilgore said he wouldn’t execute Hitler.”

Should say “that KAINE said he wouldn’t execute Hitler.” Still false, of course.

  2. Should say “that KAINE said he wouldn’t execute Hitler.”

You’re quite right. I’m forever reversing their names. It’s a wonder anybody ever knows what I’m talking about. :)

Was the Times-Dispatch also lying when they said the same thing?

I’ll give ’em the benefit of the doubt and say they were confused. They didn’t base a campaign for office based on the quote — I can see how they’d be somewhat less cautious.

  3. Yep…coming from the School of Journalism that Walter Annenberg Fortune and estate built too. For those who don’t know Annenberg was a friend of Ronald Reagan.
