Kilgore 0wn3d by Kaine.

Today brought the second Kaine/Kilgore debate. Once again, Kaine beat up on Kilgore. (For a refresher on the last debate, see: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.) For the AP, Bob Lewis writes:

Under relentless questioning about what he would do if a new Supreme Court overturned its 1973 abortion decision, Kilgore answered only that he supported a “a culture of life.”

“But, Mr. Kilgore, it’s a simple question,” debate moderator Tim Russert said, demanding a yes or no answer to whether he would outlaw abortion except for cases of rape, incest or the mother’s life.

Kilgore replied that the question was “a hypothetical. You don’t know what any Supreme Court in the future is going to do.”

“If the Virginia legislature passed a tax increase, would you veto it or sign it?” Russert persisted.

“I would veto it,” Kilgore answered.

“That’s a hypothetical question,” the NBC “Meet The Press” host interjected, cutting Kilgore off as a crowd of about 500 business leaders and politicians – most of them sympathetic to Kaine – broke into laughter at Kilgore’s expense.

Oh. Damn. No you diahn’t.

Quoth Larry Sabato: “This was Kaine’s debate… it wasn’t even close.”

Maybe it’s time to replace that debate coach. Kilgore’s been a terrible speaker. Always has, always will.

  1. Loved the laughter part. Poor Jerry…ripped by ridicule. Oh, the indignity! How are there any Kilgore supporters left?

    No, but it would be funny if he did…

    I’m hoping you do some more of those audio edits like “I Trust Me”, et al.

    Sounds like some great ones could surface out of this debate.

    I’ve got to get the complete audio of the debate. I’ve been out of the house most of the day, and haven’t looked around for it — I assume it’s out there somewhere.

  4. Well, I for one was amazed at the last summer’s debate that nobody picked up on the meaningless babble (about SOLs) that Kilgore gave when asked for an opinion on whether to mandate teaching “Intelligent Design.”

    I am glad Russert sustained the question of abortion–the panel didn’t ask these things to get irrellevant rambles. They asked the questions to get answers. Oddly, Kilgore never did end up asking the Abortion question–remember, by restating the question “hypothetically,” Russert was giving Kilgore the opportunity to get out the hole he dug for himself (nobody forced Kilgore to dig it deeper).

    But it all still begs the question–why the heck is Kilgore so touchy about intelligent design and abortion?

  5. 1. People said President Bush was a terrible speaker. Speaking ability obviously does not affect whether a man is elected.

    2. Larry Sabato also said that Russert was “much tougher on Kilgore than on Kaine.” Must be really hard to lose a debate when the moderator is going soft on a candidate.

    That’s the totally amazing thing. Kilgore has screwed this up so badly that he’s taking Kaine’s single worst issue and managed to be even weaker on it.

    Kilgore’s whole “that’s hypothetical” excuse is total bullshit. The idea of him as governor is hypothetical. Every question that he’s asked is a hypothetical, premised on the assumption that he’ll win the election. Cherry picking which hypotheticals that he wants to answer is just plain silly.

    The reason he was so much tougher on Kilgore was because he wouldn’t answer a single question put to him and it was insulting.

    If Kaine had been as spiteful, divisive, and shifty, Russert would have crushed him too.

    Thing is Kaine ACUTALLY ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS HE WAS ASKED.

    What does it tell you about how a guy will be when he’s Governor and he won’t asnwer a simple question. Does that inspire faith in you? Does it make you think, “hey, after he’s elected, he’ll suddenly get really articulate and honest.”

    Kilgore flat out lied and said there was a connection between Al-qaeda and Hispanic Streetgangs.

    We don’t know much about Jerry Kilgore, but we do know that he won’t answer a simple question, and that he WILL LIE… oh! and that his office and his family have been targets of criminal investigations that resulted in indictments.

    Does Kilgore have the character to inspire our faith?
