Lynchburg as college town.

A week ago, I wrote about Lynchburg, VA’s bright future. Today, Margaret Goerig has a good article in the Lynchburg News & Advance about Lynchburg’s odd status as a college town. They lack the CBD that make so many other college towns vital and active, leaving students hanging out at the Wal-Mart or driving to Charlottesville. This is a perfect time for a savvy developer to do very well in downtown Lynchburg.

  1. Lynchburg certainly has a nice little minor league baseball park, which is important to me. :)

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise faces the same issues, perhaps even moreso since it’s a smaller area than Lynchburg. There has always been an uneasy relationship between the town and the college. Although that is easing somewhat (especially so over the last ten years), Wise still isn’t a college town.

The school is excellent, though, and they are attracting better students every year. And I don’t say that just because I was on the adjunct faculty last year.

  2. Lynchburg is in the middle of a major renaissance. If you’ve not been in a while, you should go. Monument Terrace is in the middle of renovations which will restore the war memorial’s original glory. Amazement Square is one of the best children’s museums I’ve ever been to. There’s a fairly long bike trail along the river, departing from the lower basin. And, if you want to see a great example of good urban design, the Wyndhurst community is a great place to visit.
