Kilgore on negative campaigning.

This is great. The moderator of Saturday’s debate asks Jerry Kilgore whether he agrees that the tone of the campaign is negative and non-substantive, and what steps that he’ll take to change that.

  1. And, just to avoid any confusion, this is excerpted. I excerpted the question and then a portion of his response for the purpose of contrast. There was no portion of his response in which he actually provided any kind of a response — the bit that I included was simply the most ludicrous part of his reply.

  2. To be fair, it’s a tough question for Kilgore or Kaine to answer kindly. Are they supposed to say, “Yeah, I’m sorry. I’ve been nasty.” or are they supposed to say, “Yeah, the other candidate has been really nasty and unsubstansive. I appreciate you bringing that up.” or are they supposed to indignantly say that of course they aren’t being nasty and recite a litany of meaningless positive things they’ve said.

  3. I did in my post that introduced the series, which I linked back to in this blog entry:

I’ve excerpted some audio clips from the debate. Think of them as Cliff’s Notes versions — I’ve cut out long silence, unnecessary bits, things that bore me, etc., reducing exchanges to what I figure is their essence. There’s no audio equivalent of “…”, so just know that they’ve been sliced up.

I’m also providing and linking to both the transcript and the full MP3. I can’t be much more open about this. :)
