PPP’s survey of likely Republican voters in Mississippi and Alabama is really something.

Forget the presidential race—the other responses are pretty amazing. Only 14% believe that the presidentis is Christian (45% believe he’s Muslim, 41% don’t know). Just 26% believe in evolution. One in five believe that interracial marriage should be a crime, with just 67% supporting its legality. It’s little wonder that these two states generally show up at the bottom of nearly any state index of success or well-being.

  1. this is the dark side of the Republican right wing… i.e the “base”.

these states are RED, RED, RED.

who said the GOP does not have a big tent? Neanderthals are welcomed with open arms, eh?

so where these polls of ALL residents of these states including all races?

are the numbers even more amazing if you just include Caucasians?

  2. Oh, I think you can pretty much count on the likely Republican voters in Mississippi and Alabama as just being Caucasians.

  3. While Mississippi and Alabama may end up at the bottom of nearly any state index of success, they are at the top of one index – the Top 10 States which take in more (like 2x more) money from the Federal government than they pay in Federal taxes. Virginia joins them on that list.

The New Testament describes those who do not live in Christ:
They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts…and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Ephesians 4

  4. I guess I do find it interesting that woman are more likely to believe that Obama’s a Muslim, less likely to believe in evolution, and more likely to believe that interracial marriage should be illegal.

Although looking deeper at the crosstabs… I guess something doesn’t make a whole ton of sense: 44% of people who identified as “very liberal” said interracial marriage should be illegal (49% said legal), whereas only 24% of “very conservative” people did (63% said legal).

Are “very conservative” people more open to interracial marriage than “very liberal” people, or is something wonky going on that would lead me to believe some of these numbers are suspect?

  5. Take a look at the “somewhat Liberal” column re: interracial marriage. 92% pro-legal, 0% pro-illegal.
