A reminder about “Warner Republicans.”

Last October I forecast open rebellion in the Republican Party if they nominated Gilmore to run against Warner. Between now and November, let’s see how accurate that proves to be. I think it will be even more pronounced than I’d predicted. Hager, having served in Warner’s cabinet, would be understanding of Republicans who choose to [...]

Frederick elected RPV chair; Dems to gain his seat.

In a wish come true, Delegate Jeff Frederick has been elected RPV Chairman, replacing Lt. Gov. John Hager after less than a year on the job. The 32-year-old Frederick is considerably to the right of Hager — your stereotypical angry Republican — and he’s all but promised to accelerate his party’s plunge off the cliff.
Given [...]

Warner launches general election ad campaign.

Jim Gilmore was nominated (by a 66-vote margin) by Republicans for U.S. Senate just an hour ago, and already Mark Warner’s campaign has a TV ad that excoriates Gilmore, while managing to stay upbeat and positive:

That’ll be the theme of the race between now and November. Warner is going to club Gilmore over the head [...]

Instantish aggregator updates.

If you want your blog entries to be (almost) immediately syndicated on Virginia Political Blogs, set your blogging software’s list of “update services” to include http://www.vapoliticalblogs.com/xmlrpc.php. Ditto for Charlottesville Blogs, at http://www.cvilleblogs.com/xmlrpc.php. Your blogging software may not support update services, in which case you’ll just have to wait for my software to get around to [...]

My RPV convention wish list.

The Republican Party of Virginia is having their state convention this weekend. I’m excited about it. The theme of this blog for the past few years has been that, given a choice, Virginia Republicans will always choose wrongly. Not wrong in hindsight, but wrong like should I pick up some dinner on the way [...]

Do you really want to brag about that?

I got an e-mail from John Hager’s reelection campaign today:
Conservative icon Ollie North has joined the Hager team sending an important letter endorsing John Hager. Conservatives in Virginia know that Ollie North stands firm on his principles and won’t allow his friends to be attacked and maligned without standing to defend them.
The really interesting [...]

XKCD NYT.

Randy Munroe, creator of brilliant geek comic xkcd, was profiled in the New York Times yesterday.

On the merits of sales tax holidays.

Norm Leahy advances the theory that sales tax holidays are a goofy and ineffective gimmick. Jim Bacon figures that the hurricane supplies one is the best example of that. Most of these things appear to be brochure bills, a way for conservatives to tout their successes to the base, but without actually reducing state revenues, [...]

The first dance.

Some dear friends got married this weekend. I was the defacto wedding photographer and, fortunately, a few turned out well.

Arctic ice shelf breaking up.

A Canadian military research expedition to the Arctic has found an enormous network of cracks spanning the largest ice shelf in the nation’s north. The pictures of these cracks — they’re more like canyons — are amazing.

Senate candidate walking across Tennessee.

A Nashville attorney seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate is walking from Memphis to Knoxville. That’s totally great. More candidates and officeholders should walk the length of their district. I’ve walked across Tennessee, too, but along the opposite axis, which is rather less impressive.

Virginia Republicans eating their own.

How bad has the Republican Party gotten in this area? Keith Drake has launched an attack campaign against Sen. Emmett Hanger. The outgoing Albemarle Republican chair, attacking a sitting Republican senator in an off year? The RPV is apparently unable to clamp down on these far, far-right Republicans — they’ve just lost control. This is [...]

Checking in with George Allen.

Then-senator George Allen said on Wolf Blitzer’s “The Situation Room” on September 21, 2006:
[M]y mother is a brave woman, and what I have learned from this — I have learned a lot. This is learning about my heritage. And I’m very proud of my mother. And I’m even more proud of my grandfather. And I [...]

Mama cat.

This is the mother of the two kittens we’re fostering. She’ll need a home in a week’s time. The black and white kitten is growing a lot faster than the gray one — it appears this two-kitten litter has a runt.

I’m with Bush on the food bill.

Unusually, I’ve got to support President Bush’s position on the farm bill, and oppose the supermajority in the House and the Senate who support it.
The farm bill is, functionally, the food bill, and that’s how I think of it. It substantially dictates what we eat, because it has such a strong influence in what farmers [...]

Foster family of kittens.

We’re fostering a mama cat and her two four-week-old kittens. The mama cat will need a home in a week or so. The kittens will be with a little longer, until they’re old enough to adopt. (Two pounds is, I believe, the required size, which means another few weeks.)

The two little girls look a lot [...]

Bob McDonnell’s statement on Kaine’s transportation plan, translated into plain English.

Virginia’s future prosperity depends upon the Commonwealth having a 21st Century transportation system. Growing up in Fairfax County, and later representing Virginia Beach in the House of Delegates, I have seen firsthand the transportation challenges that we face. I believe it is imperative we modernize and improve the transportation system in the Commonwealth, and I [...]

Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigade endorsed Bush.

Republicans whooping it up over the statement by a Hamas leader that he thinks Obama would be the better nominee should be reminded that the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigade endorsed George Bush for reelection in 2004. You’ll remember them for the Madrid bombings.

It’s Friday already?

Former delegate Paul Harris’ on, off, on-again candidacy for attorney general is off again.

VQR nabs an Ellie.

VQR won the single-topic issue category at the National Magazine Awards tonight for our South America issue released last fall. We were also nominated for General Excellence (fourth year running) and Photojournalism. In the latter category we were beat out by National Geographic, which is a pretty great magazine to lose to in that arena. [...]
