Del. Watkins Abbitt must be getting desperate. The conservative independent, who represents much of Central Virginia, sent out a mailer attacking Democratic challenger Connie Brennan, accusing her of raising taxes 400% while on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors. David Cole explains that this is bullshit: it’s just a county tax being increased by $8/year. He illustrates the postcard with, oddly, a picture of a kitchy store in Alaska. Connie has outraised Abbitt $190k to $170k, and Abbitt had to loan himself $50k to pull that off. It’s no wonder it’s come to this.

I’m not sure that Abbitt wants to play this particular game. He’s been in office for 21 years. I guarantee he’s cast a great many votes about each equally factually accurate and equally misleading statements could be made.
The amazing thing is that Abbitt is doing something. He’s never introduced any bills of note, you never see him anywhere, he’s got no accomplishments, and he’s done nothing for his district that I’m aware of. This is the first time he’s been roused from his slumber. Connie must really be getting under his skin.
This is not a comment on the relative merits of Abbitt and Brennan, but from what I’ve heard: He’s an Abbitt; he’s from Appomattox; he’ll be re-elected.

Besides, the utter stupidity of trying to make it seem like Connie is a tax and spender is overwhelming. Property taxes have not been raised in the time she has been on the supervisor’s board.
I lucked out in that I was able to find that picture in about 15 minutes. The tipoff for me? (I used to live in Alaska) The ‘Daily News’ paper box still in the picture. The makers of the flyer ‘shopped out ‘Alaska’, but not the paper box. And the ‘Liquor Store’? Pure magic and a gift.

Oh, by the way: I have seen Abbitt more in the last 10 days than at any time since I have lived here (7 years).
He is literally everywhere, and is running scared. Connie is doing a wonderful job, and should be congratulated on the race she is running.
JS: Abbitt is running scared like never before. He has no party apparatus, and the R’s will only help him just so much. Even though he is a de facto Republican.
It looks like a lot of Republicans are scared silly this election year. Can’t blame all of this on NOVA.
