5 tracks that I most recently bought from iTunes.
- Coldplay, “The Scientist”
- Etta James, “At Last”
- Obadiah Parker, “Hey Ya”
- Zero 7, “In the Waiting Line”
- The Shins, “New Slang”
Hey, I have four of those. And three are from the iTunes Store.

“The Scientist” was one of the best music videos that I’ve seen in the past 8 years…

Only one was available w/o DRM, “The Scientist,” so I had to settle for getting the rest in an encumbered format. I actually bought a six track today, Colin Hay’s “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You,” which was also DRMd AAC.
Incidentally, I just checked out the contents of the actual file of “The Scientist” (using the *nix utility “strings”) and discovered a line with my name and another with my e-mail address. Here’s hoping somebody develops a tool to strip that sort of thing out.

The Shins. Awesome. My favorite song of theirs is “We Will Become Silhouettes.”

I’m old, help me out. Why wouldn’t you just buy the spectacularly good “A Rush of Blood to the Head” and convert to that IPod thingy? Less the intro track, that albumn is an aural classic. And Etta James “At Last” is a meal full of music.
I’m having a hard time understanding the allure of buying the downloaded single. But then, I thought the CD was the new sliced bread.

Because I really, really don’t like Coldplay. I held off for a couple of years before buying “The Scientist” for that very reasons. And I’m just not that familiar with Etta James. I’d rather buy one song, see if I really like and, if I do, then I’ll buy the album.
CDs are expensive. I’m not going to invest $15 in an artist that I may not like. I’d much rather spend $1-$2 and, six months later, then I might buy the whole thing. It’s been many years since artists have made albums, in the sense of Sgt. Pepper or Pet Sounds. If they’re not going to create a monolithic work, I’ll feel free to cherry-pick the bits I like.

Speaking of $15 CDs…check out http://www.yourmusic.com. CD’s are $6.99 with a commitment to buy one/month. Get out at any time. They have a decent selection, which I use primarily to buy older jazz or classical albums.
CD’s on this website used to be $4.99 about a year or so ago, but have gone up. I suppose I’ll get out at around $8.99, but until then, it’s a pretty good deal.

I still go to Plan 9. I like the atmosphere of a local record store (before this it was Town & Campus in Harrisonburg). Whenever I travel to new cities, I always try to find the local record stores. It’s the only kind of shopping I really like.
I suppose it’s also because I see the writing on the walls for record stores, and I’m in denial. I don’t want them to go the way of the video arcades. Plan 9 should have gotten on board with concert promotion when they had the chance. Now, it’s just a matter of years before the inevitable end…
