In Soviet Russia, bill secret(e)s you.

Here’s a not-sufficiently-known fact: Republicans in the House of Delegates changed the rules last year so that they could cast secret votes to kill bills. They made use of that rule many, many times last year. This is not democracy as it’s recognized in most of the world, and it’s damned well not democracy in Virginia. So Del. Ken Plum (D-Reston) has introduced HR48, which would require all subcommittee votes to be recorded. Ironically, this bill will probably be killed via a secret subcommittee vote. I look forward to somebody attending that subcommittee meeting and posting the list of everybody who voted against it on Richmond Sunlight, such that every one of those delegates may be driven from office.

  1. Once we get the time, I can be there, and my laptop has a built in microphone as well as video camera… With the basic movie editing software on here, we could have an excellent video. Just sayin’.

  2. This one will be in full view. Next Thursday, when the House convenes. My guess — some parliamentary maneuver that will supposedly protect people from voting against HR 48. You’ll be able to track it on Richmond Sunlight. If there’s a feed, however …

  3. I can’t help but notice that, with the notable exception of Jim Hoeft at Bearing Drift (who deserves serious accolades for this), most of our blogger friends on the right seem to be awfully quiet about HR 48.

Since I don’t see how anyone could OPPOSE this measure and call themselves a blogger, citizen journalist, or whatever else, I only have one possible theory for the silence.

Virginia seems to have a lot of Republican bloggers who won’t stand up to their party, even if they think they’re in the wrong. I could be wrong, and if I am, please someone correct me and tell me they actually oppose HR 48.

    Please…
