The origin of self-assembling taxonomies.

A lot of folks may have never encountered tagging prior to using Richmond Sunlight. Now somebody has conducted a study into the folksonomies (folk + taxonomy) that emerge from this process and found that the self-organizing behavior is based on some simple social and linguistic rules. Hee hee! How amusing that an article on naming, taxonomy, and identification has a mis-labeled image. (The picture of a pipe has the alt text “Picture of magnetic field”.)

More on topic, Clay Shirky has a famous piece on ontologies and folksonomies, but it is perhaps a bit longer of a read than most folks are willing to plunge into.
