This is attached to a tree in my yard. I’m guessing it’s a cocoon, but I’m not sure. Anybody know?

I don’t know, but after the last rains, a bunch of cedar trees out my way had these things growing on them:
Only with longer, creepier, slimier tentacles. (If you don’t know what this is, here’s a discussion.)
Yarrgh, image tags don’t go through. Just click on “here’s a discussion” to see what I was trying to share in comment #1.
I think the Easter Bunny lost his tail on the way to your basket.
It looks like a messed up version of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”
Janis: Ouch! Poor thing! Wouldn’t you think he’d have noticed something like that though? :)
Don’t you know where baby muppets come from?
Sheesh. You should have paid more attention in sex ed.
I do believe that is what Rob Schilling looked like before he adopted the ‘Bon Jovi Roadie’ look…
Whatever it is.. cocoon or otherwise.. I’d snip it off before it had a chance to damage that tree or any surrounding it.
If it’s a cocoon then you can take the budding branch it’s hooked too and pop it into a jar then wait and watch to see what pops out of it. Safer for everything that way.
Saw a few of those at Shaun’s new place in Fluvanna this weekend, but they were on smaller plants and looked almost like they belonged there.
