Dems to gain seats in House.

In today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch, Tyler Whitley writes:

Democrats, who broke a long losing streak by picking up three House of Delegates seats in 2003 and a fourth in a special election, may be poised to gain more seats this fall, political observers say.

Republicans dispute that, but retirements and the fact that incumbent Republicans face stronger challengers point to a likely Democrat gain of one or two delegates in the 100-member House.

A highly placed Republican source said internal polling shows some decline in the number of people who say they are Republican, tied to dissatisfaction with President Bush.

I have to admit that my brain isn’t big enough to track all of the races in the state, so I don’t have any special ability to forecast the number of seats that will be gained (or lost) by Democrats this November. But Dems are so far down in Richmond that Republicans shouldn’t be too upset when we continue our seat-winning streak. We’re down 38/62, so if that goes to 41/59, that’s not much more than a step in the right direction. Still, these things are done by increments.

  1. Getting to 40% in the House is a big deal on it’s own. At 40% the Democratic party would then have a whole laundry list of rights and powers under House rules that they don’t have right now.
