Are they supposed to say, "Yeah, I'm sorry. I've been nasty." or are they supposed to say, "Yeah, the other candidate has been really nasty and unsubstansive. I appreciate you bringing that up." or are they supposed to indignantly say that of course they aren't being nasty and recite a litany of meaningless positive things they've said.
